Penguins Claim Forward Zach Boychuk off Waivers

Thursday, 01.31.2013 / 12:42 PM / NewsPittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed forward Zach Boychuk off of waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes, it was announced by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

A native of Airdrie, Alberta, Boychuk played four seasons of junior hockey with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League (WHL) between 2005-09. Boychuk represented Team Canada in back-to-back World Junior Championships in 2008 and '09, earning a gold medal both years. He served as an alternate captain for Canada in '09.

Boychuk, 23, has spent the majority of this season with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL) – the top minor-league affiliate of the Hurricanes. Boychuk was leading the Checkers in scoring with 32 points (16G-16A) in 37 games played. He also appeared in one NHL game this season with Carolina.

Originally drafted by the Hurricanes in the first round (14th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Boychuk has played parts of the past five seasons with the Hurricanes, tallying 18 points (7G-11A) in 73 career regular-season games. His best season at the NHL level came in 2009-10, when he notched nine points (3G-6A) in 31 games. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Boychuk has spent most of the previous four seasons playing in the AHL for Charlotte and the Albany Rivers Rats. Boychuk's best AHL season was '10-11, when he established career highs offensively with 22 goals, 43 assists and 65 points in 60 games.

To play on Geno's line. Obviously, he's been a disappointment for the Canes so far at the NHL level, but in 64 games last season in the AHL, he had 21 goals and 23 assists. Had 22 G and 43 A in 60 games with Charlotte in the previous season. Not too bad, but it is the AHL. He was leading the Checkers in scoring with 32 points (16G-16A) in 37 games played so far this season. Who knows? Maybe a change of scenery is what he needs.

And to quote the Bibster: "HE'S A WESTENER!!!!"

That makes 8 first rounders on the roster:
Sid, Geno, MAF, Despres, Nisky, Sutter, Opik, Boychuk
It's A Great Day for Hockey!!!

According to Rob Rossi, the Pens claimed Johnny Boychuk.

Nobody covers the Pens like the Trib, yes?

THN - Forecaster - Z. Boychuk

Zach Boychuk
#18
Forward
5'10", 185 lbs.

Birth Date:
October 4, 1989 (23 years old)

Place of Birth:
Airdrie, Alta.

Shoots:L
Experience:4 years
Drafted:Drafted by Carolina in 2008 (1/14)

Assets:
Is versatile enough to be used in any game situation, and at any forward position. Has scoring potential, grit and hockey sense. Sets a good example in terms of his work ethic.

Flaws:
His lack of ideal size for the pro game may hinder his ability to produce points on a consistent basis at the NHL level, so he may have to settle for a defensive role.

Career Potential:
Versatile forward with some upside.

Small guy, but hey, if he brings something to the table, then great. Maybe they're gonna slot him next to Sutter?

Ideally, you go to what would likely work:

Boychuk - Crosby - Dupuis
Kunitz - Malkin - Neal
Cooke - Sutter - Kennedy
Glass - Vitale - Adams
Jeffrey

OR

Cooke - Crosby - Dupuis
Kunitz - Malkin - Neal
Boychuk - Sutter - Kennedy
Glass - Vitale - Adams
Jeffrey

But, I'm not an NHL coach. You DON'T break up 14/71/18. They lit the league on fire. So, obviously, break them up. *facepalm*

Word from Bylsma is that he'll see time on Geno line.

“He's going to add some competition to our lineup,” Bylsma said. “He could see time on Malkin's wing.”

A reaction on one Interweb Blog:

Quote

Say what? Talk about a stab in the dark. The dearth of quality young wingers in this organization is so bad that they have to pluck a guy off waivers (from a bad team, no less) and plug him in next to Geno. I knew things were bad, but this is getting ridiculous.

Yeah, can't say that I can argue otherwise.

Chris Borque v2.0?
Cal O'Reilly v2.0?

WTF?

Sure looks like Shero is desperate and he's throwing shit at the wall to see if anything sticks. I guess I can't blame them because they didn't have to give anything up for a previous 1st rounder, but the kid hasn't produced at the NHL level. Sounds similar to another guy we know already. (#25)

Ballsma. Apparently the route keeps changing.

Looks like Shero doesn't like the trumpet players in the band, so he's going to the Salvation Army for replacements.

NO U.

2011/12
1. E. Malkin 50-59-109 pts
2. J. Neal 40-41-81pts
3. C. Kunitz 26-35-61 pts - 82 games played
4. P. Dupuis 25-34-59 pts

2010/11
1. S. Crosby 32-34-66 pts
2. K. Letang 8-42-50 pts
3. C. Kunitz 23-25-48 pts - 66 games played
4. T. Kennedy 21-24-45 pts

Guy is consistent. However, Kunitz fit better with Malkin's line. Crosby can play with anyone with speed. While Kunitz does have a decent set of wheels, his presence in front of the net works better with Neal and Malkin.

Or I'm high.
