STAAL TURNS DOWN 10-YEAR CONTRACT OFFER FROM PENGUINS

It appears that Jordan Staal isn't looking at a long-term contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins at this time.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports on Twitter that Staal has turned down a 10-year offer from the Penguins, indicating to the club that he doesn't plan on signing an extension now.

"He is not prepared to enter into a contract extension at this time," Staal's agent, Paul Krepelka, told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

Staal scored 25 goals and 25 assists in 62 games with the Penguins in 2011-12. He led the team in playoff scoring, notching six goals and three assists in the Penguins' six-game series loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Staal is entering the final year of a four-year deal with an average annual value of $4 million per year. Though just 23 years old, under the current collective bargaining agreement he would be eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Originally selected second overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Staal has scored 120 goals and 128 assists in 431 career games, all with the Penguins.

Winning a 2007 IIHF World Championship gold medal with Team Canada and the 2009 Stanley Cup, Staal already has a resume full of accomplishments at the pro level. He also was a finalist for the 2007 Calder Memorial Trophy and was a finalist for the 2010 Selke Trophy.

Geeze, you even have the thread in caps.

Hubby just told me, he said I should sell my Staal jerseys. So, is Carolina trying to be another Sedin club?

I was just too lazy to change what TSN had. Just a copy and paste job.

They'll have one more Staal than Sedin's. How long before they have them all?

Just a thought so don't rip me too big of another one please as it's just an old mind day dreaming, but if we trade Staal and Martin to the Canes, I wonder what we'd have to give up to get Scuds back. Granted he's a UFA next year but I would like to see him back in a Pens sweater. His salary is only 3.4, and yes it would have to be renegotiated next year, but that would fill the void left by getting rid of Martin with a better D-man who has played Lt. Dan's system. We take on roughly 3 mil in cap hit with Faulk and Sutter (Not sure what Faulk would bring to the table), pick up Scuds 3.4 and still have 1.6 left over. Be kind it's just the ramblings of an old man. :Jonathan:

David Morehouse was just interviewed at the Pirate game by Potash. Nothing said about Staal. Josh Yohe just posted this on his Twatter:

Potash not exactly asking Morehouse the tough questions. Ha.

I'm interested to hear what kind of money he was offered. It doesn't surprise me he'd pass tho unless the offer just blew him away.

10-years is a long contract, especially with a new CBA looming.
